Four Of Spades

Another dream about The Butter Mouse. He juggled near a stone building.

An aggressive buzz from the front door intercom interrupted his show. The postman was long gone by the time I got downstairs. Every hallway is dark, and the man who plays loud music in flat two is silent.

A beige Jiffy bag leans against the doorstep, three items inside desperate for release. I punched the air, and retrieved my prize.

The juggling balls were something I had considered purchasing since January. In the current situation they are ideal. Their skins are yellow, blue, red and green, with innards that crunch with the texture of dried beans or polystyrene. They smell like leather when you bring them close to your nostrils.

These are the exact kind that I remember the Butter Mouse using. The cheapo ones associated with homemade circuses and party games. I can juggle two balls for two minutes without dropping any, and am rusty but passable with three. With more practice soon I won't have to concentrate.

This is perfect for the year long story challenge. I can juggle into a state of meditation to think about my writing, and my theories, using a skill shared with the Butter Mouse. Plus this is a form of indoor exercise that no one seems to have thought of. Juggling for several hours works up a sweat.

I thought these retro toys would be too bespoke to find with ease. That manufacturers had shunned them for electronics and franchised toys. But the search and order took five clicks. My computer paused for a few seconds before offering up the search results. Did something affect the connection?

The sun warms the streets of Clifton, and the heat stays a guest into the evening. I often force open the stiff frame of my window. Anyone in the flats on the other side of the road will be able to see me.

I juggle at funky hours long past when the clock ticks back to single digits. What can I do? Shout to the neighbours that throwing three spheres in the air will help me find the Butter Mouse?

Yesterday my parents called during a juggling session. I must remember to call them back.
