The problem is what’s happening. I saw the animal again today. Something huge and black swirling around on one of the hills opposite. Near a redbrick farmhouse. Looping in mad circles. What could it be? An escaped jaguar? I highlighted the animal in the photo. Hard to miss!
How can I explain this in my writing? Should I mention that I sprinted down the other side, looking over my shoulder, close to tears? That something clattering around in the thin woods like a drill in a bucket.
How do I describe the sculptures running down the grass? Finger thick branches the length of a shin. Sharp enough to cut you on one end, and perhaps the other end too, if it was not rammed into the ground. Chunks of fruit dying on the end of these spikes, browning in the air, but fresh enough to still drip with juice. Laid out within the last few hours.
Once I start finding stuff like that, I do not know what to include. What if people think I am making everything up? That this is part of my catalogue of fiction?
It is not just the walks. The house clutches at me. Yesterday I cleared out the shed to pass the time. Rusty shears and moulding twine from the previous owner, that kind of kipple. When I removed the old lawnmower, the back wheel bumped against something brown and serrated. Cardboard teeth. Long strands of white felt glued to each side to enhance the illusion.
